Hotel Management is a field of education that includes an extensive range of subjects involved with the operational features and work of hotels. The Hotel Management students after passing out to get a variety of jobs. The people who study with Hotel Management get jobs like managing a hotel, restaurants, cruise management, administration, and management of catering, such as hospital catering and airline catering. They also get jobs as chefs at restaurants and cruises. Eligibility Criteria for Hotel Management in India

One needs to complete their 12th grade with a minimum of 45% of marks. Some colleges make it compulsory for students to have cleared English as their core subject in their +2s if they want to do the Hotel Management Course. If one needs admission in PG courses then one has to be a graduate and those who had Hotel Management as their UG course, those students are preferred. For PG courses some colleges make it a part of the eligibility criteria that students need to secure a minimum of 55% of marks in their graduation.

  • Good Communication Skills

A person should be a good listener first, he/she should first listen to the opposite person and should try to understand what that person is trying to say and then put his/her inputs to it. One has to be very polite and friendly while talking to their customers and also while communicating with one’s team. Being relaxed and having a good body language will make you more approachable and will definitely encourage others to speak openly with you. You should be confident and should be respectful towards all the fellow working staff. 

  • To work well as part of a team

You have to contribute to teamwork, which can be done in many ways such as planning strategies, giving ideas, and effort. You have to be cooperative and should have proper coordination among the team members. Having proper communication with your team is necessary when you put forward your thoughts and make it clear for your team to understand.  And most importantly you have to be respectful towards your team members.  you have to respect their opinions and also by being an attentive listener.

  • Good leadership skills

To be a good leader you have to have proper communication and which is very crucial. You should first listen and try to understand what the other person is trying to say and then put your opinion.   • Managing and Disciplining staff

You need to manage and maintain the discipline among the staff which can be done by establishing clear rules for the staff. Maintaining a proper dress code, ensuring their behavior towards co-workers, customers are decent, discriminatory factors, and the use of appropriate and acceptable language is used by them. Lastly, no illegal behavior should be tolerated such as theft, illegal drug use, intoxication, and violent actions. Immediate termination, suspension, or actions should be taken against these. 

  • Organizing shifts for staff and informing them of their work commitments

You should fill the busy shifts with the most skilled staff of yours and be aware of their capabilities. Each and every staff should have the schedule with them and should be well aware of their work. While scheduling the shifts one needs to keep in mind that everyone should get two days off. The schedules should be planned in advance so that the staff has the time to plan.

  • Organizing training for new staff members

Find out what you need to teach them, plan it out, look out for the skills which are required for the new recruitments, and the skills which are required for your workforce to know and learn for the current workflow. Make them aware of your resources or inventory. 

  • Make sure that the environment of the hotel is properly maintained at all times

Make sure you take care of the environment of the hotel by installing energy-saving technologies, using things that can be easily recycled, taking up the Go Green initiative, and even encouraging the guests to take it up. You should start composting rather than throwing food and water away as composting has a lot of benefits.  Save water and take care that there is no wastage of water in the hotel premises. Lastly, there should be other renewable sources of energy implemented. Example: solar panels etc. 

  • Assessing feedback from customers

In a hotel one of the most important things is feedback as it makes you know your flaws and helps you to make them better in the future. So, talk to your customers and ask them how their stay in the hotel was, make a feedback form and ask them to fill it up during the checkout. In today’s world so many things are turning digital so you should also have a social media review column where customers who have stayed at your hotel can go and give their views about their stay.

Jobs you can get after completing education in Hotel Management are as follows:

  • Housekeeping

The job of housekeeping is to clean hotels and hospitals as well as commercial buildings. Their jobs include replacing the bedding, ensuring that the rooms, halls, and bathrooms are clean, vacuum, sweep, mop them, and the like.

  • Airline Catering and Cabin Services

This is a job in which food services are provided in an airline on board for the people traveling. It also includes food services at restaurants of specific airport terminals.

  • Cruise ship Hotel Management

This job makes one in charge of all the hotel operations happening on board of a ship or cruise and requires one to ensure the environment is satisfying and enjoyable for the guests and the crew members.

  • Hotel Manager

The job of a hotel manager is to manage all the activities in a hotel, resort, and guest houses. Its job is to supervise the works done by the employees and staff of that particular hotel or resort. 

  • Club Management

The work of the club management team is to take care of the proper operating of the programs, meetings, parties, etc. held in the club. 

Salary in Hotel Management Field

The salary of a hotel manager can vary from one hotel to another. After completion of one’s diploma or degree course, one can enter the Hotel sector as a trainee and work to gain experience. The entry-level salary can be Rs.10K per month for the trainees while with experience. 5-star hotels pay the trainees 15K to 25K per month, the fast-food outlets pay them 25K to 30K, airlines pay 35K to 50K at the beginner’s level while cruise hotel management pays almost 65K to 80K per month. The salary at every level is bound to increase and if one keeps polishing their skills then they are bound to earn a lot out of this career.
