  1. Graduation grade point average of at least 50%. 
  2. MBA admission is open to students from any field, but some colleges, such as IIT Kharagpur, require a four-year bachelor’s degree. 
  3. MBA students have no upper age limit, but certain MBA exams, such as the ATMA, require students to be 21 years old at the time of the exam.
  4. MBA programs can be completed after three or four years of college (depending on the MBA college’s eligibility criteria). 
  5. Aside from the general MBA eligibility criteria, there are additional requirements such as work experience (in the case of Executive MBA and MBA Abroad), entrance exam score, and performance in the group discussion and personal interview rounds; all of which are subjective and dependent on which MBA college a student is aiming for. 
  6. There are some exceptions to the MBA eligibility criteria for reserved category students. For SC/ST/PwD/OBC categories, many MBA colleges and entrance exams offer a minimum of 5% graduation relaxation.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India’s most popular and competitive MBA entrance exam. The test is held once a year to screen students for admission to 20 Indian Institutes of Management’s flagship business management programs (IIMs). Furthermore, over 100+ B-schools accept the CAT exam score to expedite admission to MBA and PGDM programs. In the month of December, nearly 2.3 lakh MBA aspirants take the CAT exam. The CAT exam is administered using a computer. In most cases, the application process for the CAT exam begins in August and the exam is held in November.

2. XAT – Xavier Aptitude Test

XAT is the second most popular and considered to be the toughest MBA entrance exam in India. It is often referred to as the “gateway” to the Xavier’s league. The Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, organizes the Xavier Aptitude Test on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). Aside from these, nearly 150 B-schools use the XAT exam score to select students for MBA and PGDM programs. The test is used to screen and shortlist students for admission to post-graduate management degree programs at XLRI, XIM, XISS, LIBA, and other institutions. In the month of January, approximately 1 lakh aspirants take the XAT exam. The XAT exam will be conducted online starting in 2019. In most cases, the application process for the XAT exam begins in January.

3. GMAT – Graduate Management Aptitude Test

The Graduate Management Aptitude Test, or GMAT, is an MBA entrance exam designed for candidates who want to pursue their MBA in a foreign country. The Graduate Management Admission Council, or GMAC, is a non-profit organization that administers the GMAT. Approximately 2100 universities around the world now accept GMAT scores for admission to management programs. GMAT scores are used to determine admission to MBA and MIM (Masters in Management) programs. The GMAT exam score has also begun to gain wider acceptance in some of India’s top business schools in the last decade. The GMAT Exam is held at nearly 34 test centers across India throughout the year. In a given academic year, an MBA candidate can take the GMAT five times.

4. MAT – Management Aptitude Test

The Management Aptitude Test, or MAT, is a national MBA entrance exam that is administered four times per academic year. The All India Management Association organizes the entrance exam. The MAT exam is usually held in February, May, September, and December. Both a ‘Computer Based Test’ and a ‘Paper Based Test’ are used to administer the exam. Candidates are also permitted to take the exam in both modes in the same session. Approximately 20,000 MBA candidates take the MAT exam each session. Nearly 300+ B-schools accept the MAT exam score as part of the admissions process for MBA programs.

5. CMAT – Common Management Admission Test

The Common Management Admission Test, or CMAT, is a national entrance exam used to screen students for admission to management programs. Until 2018, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) administered the CMAT (AICTE). The CMAT exam will be administered by the newly formed NTA / National Testing Agency beginning in 2019. The CMAT exam registration process typically begins in November, with the entrance exam taking place in January each year. CMAT scores are accepted by nearly 1000 B-schools for admission to MBA and PGDM programs. These include prestigious MBA schools such as WeSchool in Mumbai, KJ Somaiya in Delhi, and GILM in Chennai.
